Resources

In this section of the blog you will find different resources and ideas to develop Emotional Intelligence.

ACTIVITIES
  • Emotional Intelligence Tests:

  • Fishes

This activity we made in class is about a book called “Happy” by Mies van Hout. In each  page appear different fishes showing all the emotions young children can encounter. The fishes painted colourful but with a black background.

The teacher showing the different fishes to the pupils can ask them how they think is the fish feeling and why. In this way, children get to know the different emotions, and related to this what characteristics has each fish to be feeling that emotion ( Facial, body expression)

  • Helping others gain self-esteem

We made this activity in class to give an example of an activity that can be carried out in groups to work emotional intelligence but mainly to help students gain self-esteem. For the activity each student has a piece of paper sticked on their back without been able to see it. When everyone has a piece of paper on their back they have to take a pen and write positive compliments about his/her classmates on each others back. They have to write something to everyone in the class so no one feels left over.

The teacher has  stickers with different facial expressions on them. She gives them to the students and they analyse them one by one, identifying which feeling it is, when we can feel like that, which are main characteristics of that feeling… Afterwards the teacher reads a book to the students and they will have to identify the emotions of the characters using the stickers they have.

  • Creating a monster

The teacher gives a monster body made of cardboard to each student. Apart from that, she/he also offers different kinds of eyes, mouths, ears, arms… Then, the students will create their monsters choosing the parts of the body they want (as what they are creating are monsters, they will also be able to choose how many eyes, arms, etc. their monsters will have). Depending on the parts of the body they choose, their monster will look happy, sad, angry, scared… This will give all the classmates the chance to guess how are the others’ monsters feeling. So by means of this activity children will be able to relate physical features to emotions and identify them in a funny way.
