Advices for teachers

“Accept children unconditionally, acknowledge their perspective and empathize” (Markham, 2014 and Punset, 2009)
Empathizing doesn’t mean we agree, but that we see it from the other person’s side too.

“Allow expression” (Markham, 2014 and Punset, 2009)
We have to take into account that both positive and negative emotions exist because they help us to survive. Thus, we have to admit that children express their emotions through words or behaviours. However, we have to train them to express them in a constructive and acceptable way.

“Help children naming their emotions (Markham, 2014 and Punset, 2009)
To do this, we have to give children the opportunity experiment emotions and accompany them if it is necessary.

“Teach taking responsibilities and overcoming obstacles” (Markham, 2014 and Punset, 2009)
We must teach children being responsible for their actions and finding their own solutions constructively. So our role is not rule, but lead and guide.

“Allow children to behave spontaneously” (Australian Primary Schools, 2013 and Punset, 2009)
In this way, we encourage children to express their emotions and thoughts more freely and with more confidence. We have to take into account that not all behaviors are acceptable, yes instead, all the emotions and desires. So it is necessary to impose certain limits to behaviours.

“Avoid humiliations, labels and comparisons” (Punset, 2009)
In this way, children will learn to rely on their feelings, regulate their emotions and solve their problems.

“Avoid punishments” (Punset, 2009 and Irizar, 2014)
Otherwise negative emotions that affect relationships will grow inside them”

“Express our approval at the good deeds of the child” (Punset, 2009)
Which means congratulating and appreciating the good acts of our students.

“Form stable attachment bonds” (Punset, 2009)
To achieve this, we must respect the physical, psychological and emotional needs of each child. The aim is to promote empathy and self-confidence.

“Be a role model” (Australian Primary Schools, 2013)
Be a good example for children, showing children appropriate ways to behave and express their emotions.
